Why Google Workspace Integration Matters
Most schools use Google Workspace for Education. Most web filters can only filter by device or IP address. The gap: a 5th grader and a 12th grader using the same Chromebook model should have different filtering policies.
Google Workspace integration enables user-based filtering — policies that follow the student, not the device. A student logging into any device gets their grade-level filtering policy automatically.
What Integration Enables
User-based policies — Filter differently by student vs. staff, elementary vs. high school, general ed vs. special programs
OU-level filtering — Mirror your Google Workspace OU structure in your filtering policies. /Elementary gets stricter rules than /Staff/IT.
Per-student monitoring — Activity logs tied to student email addresses, not just device IPs. See exactly who did what.
Automatic sync — Students added to Google Workspace automatically appear in your web filter. No manual imports.
Class-aware filtering — Combined with Google Classroom integration, apply different policies during class time vs. free periods.
Setting Up Google Workspace Sync with KyberGate
Step 1: Go to Settings → Workspace in the KyberGate dashboard. Step 2: Click 'Connect Google Workspace' and sign in with your Google Admin account. Step 3: Grant the requested permissions (read-only access to your directory). Step 4: KyberGate syncs your users, OUs, and groups automatically.
After sync, you'll see all your users in the KyberGate Users page with their OU paths. Create policies targeting specific OUs — for example, block social media for /Students/Elementary but allow it for /Staff.
Sync Frequency
KyberGate syncs with Google Workspace every 6 hours automatically. You can trigger a manual sync anytime from Settings → Workspace. New students added to Google Workspace will appear in KyberGate within 6 hours.
Advanced: Google Classroom Integration
Beyond directory sync, KyberGate also integrates with Google Classroom for assignment-aware filtering. When a teacher assigns work that requires a specific website, KyberGate can automatically whitelist that domain for students in that class during the assignment period.
This requires the Google Classroom scope during OAuth setup. See our Google Classroom integration guide for step-by-step instructions.
