1. Overview
This privacy policy applies specifically to the "KyberGate for Teachers" Chrome extension (the "Extension") published by Kyber Systems LLC ("KyberGate," "we," "us," or "our"). The Extension lets a teacher allow or block websites for their own class and view their class schedule, directly from the browser. It requires a KyberGate teacher account provided by the teacher's school.
Our platform-wide privacy practices are described in our general Privacy Policy. This page focuses only on how the Chrome Extension handles data.
2. What the Extension Collects
The Extension collects the minimum data needed to do its single job. Specifically:
- Authentication identity: The teacher's KyberGate session token, obtained when the teacher signs in with their school Google account. This is used only to confirm the teacher is authorized to make filtering changes for their classes.
- Website domain the teacher chooses to act on: When a teacher clicks "allow" or "block" for the tab they are currently viewing, the domain of that tab is sent to the teacher's school KyberGate service to apply the rule.
- Local preferences: The teacher's last-used class and duration selection, stored locally on the device so the popup remembers their choices.
3. What the Extension Does NOT Do
- It does not collect or transmit the teacher's browsing history.
- It does not use analytics or telemetry.
- It does not use advertising or ad trackers.
- It does not sell, rent, or transfer any data to third parties.
- It does not collect location, financial, or health data.
- It does not load or execute any remote or external code. It runs only the code included in the published package.
4. How Permissions Are Used
- activeTab / tabs: Used to read the URL of the tab the teacher is currently viewing, so the teacher can allow or block that specific site for their class. No browsing history is collected or transmitted beyond the single domain the teacher chooses to act on.
- storage: Stores the teacher's KyberGate session token and last-used class/duration selection locally so they stay signed in and the popup remembers preferences.
- alarms: Refreshes the sign-in token on a schedule so the teacher isn't logged out mid-class.
- Host permissions (app.kybergate.com, api.kybergate.com, teachers.kybergate.com): These are the school's own KyberGate services. The Extension calls them to authenticate the teacher, load the teacher's classes and schedule, and apply allow/block requests. No other hosts receive data. (google.com is contacted only to display website favicons — no data is sent.)
5. Data Sharing
The Extension communicates only with the teacher's own school KyberGate services to apply the teacher's filtering choices. Data is not shared with any third party, is not sold, and is not used for advertising or any purpose beyond providing the Extension's single feature.
6. Data Retention & Deletion
Locally stored data (session token and preferences) can be cleared at any time by signing out of the Extension or removing it from Chrome. Allow/block rules applied through the Extension are managed by the school's KyberGate account and are subject to the retention terms in our general Privacy Policy.
7. Compliance
KyberGate is committed to protecting student and educator privacy in accordance with FERPA, COPPA, CIPA, and applicable state privacy laws. The Extension is used by school staff and does not knowingly collect personal information directly from students.
