Parents Just Got Real Controls: After-Hours Restrictions, Unblock Requests, and the New KyberGate Parent Portal

Bedtime controls parents manage themselves. A homework push-through toggle. Parent-initiated unblock requests your IT team reviews in one click. Full Spanish support. All live now — and none of it exists in GoGuardian, Securly, or Lightspeed.

Every school IT director knows this email. It arrives at 9:40 PM: "Can you block YouTube on my son's iPad after 8? He's supposed to be asleep." And the honest answer, with most filtering platforms, is: no. The school's filter enforces the school's policy, 24/7, the same way for every student. What happens at home is either the school's problem (it shouldn't be) or nobody's problem (it definitely shouldn't be).

This week we shipped a different answer. The KyberGate Parent Portal now gives parents real, self-service controls over their own child's school device — after hours only — plus a proper channel to request unblocks, full Spanish support, and automated privacy compliance behind the scenes.

Here's everything that's new, and how the boundaries work.

After-Hours Controls: Parents Decide Evenings, Schools Decide School Days

The core of the release is a set of per-child controls parents manage themselves at parents.kybergate.com:

  • Bedtime restrictions — pick a time window and the days it applies. During bedtime, the internet on the school device is blocked.
  • Category restrictions — block additional content categories (like social media, games, or video streaming) during evenings and weekends, even when the school's own policy allows them.
  • Pause the internet — one tap to pause browsing on the device right now. Dinner time, homework time, consequence time — parent's call.

The critical design decision is what these controls can't do:

  • They are completely inert during school hours and on campus. A parent cannot pause a device mid-lesson or block a category a teacher is using. The school day belongs to the school.
  • They can only add restrictions, never remove them. A parent cannot allow a site the school blocks. School policy is always the floor.
  • School-managed infrastructure is always exempt, so devices never lose contact with management.

This is enforced at the proxy layer across our entire filtering network — not with an app on the device that a 12-year-old can delete.

Bedtime Mode with a Homework Exception — Because Real Life Exists

The first question every parent asks about bedtime mode: "What if she actually has homework due?"

So bedtime mode ships with a choice. By default, bedtime blocks everything. But parents can flip on homework push-through, which keeps a curated list of roughly 150 school platforms reachable during the bedtime window — Google Classroom, Canvas, Schoology, PowerSchool, Khan Academy, Google Docs and Drive, IXL, Quizlet, and the rest of the legitimate school stack — while games, video, and social media stay dark.

The list is curated by us, not editable by students, and scoped strictly to the bedtime window. It never weakens category restrictions, the pause button, or any school policy.

Unblock Requests: Ending the 9 PM Email to the IT Office

The second-most-common parent email: "This site my daughter needs for her project is blocked."

Until now, that meant a parent emailing the school, the school emailing IT, IT hunting through policies, and someone eventually replying days later. Now:

  1. A parent sees a blocked site in the portal and taps Request unblock, with a reason.
  2. The request lands in the school's KyberGate dashboard with a pending-count badge.
  3. IT approves (the domain is added to policy in one click) or declines with a note the parent can read.
  4. The parent sees the outcome in the portal — and by email, if they've opted in.

Requests are validated, capped, and de-duplicated, so this doesn't become a new spam channel. To our knowledge, no other K-12 filtering platform has a parent-initiated unblock request flow. GoGuardian doesn't. Securly doesn't. Lightspeed doesn't. Parents email; IT drowns. We built the queue instead.

A Transparency Page That Says the Quiet Part Out Loud

Monitoring software earns distrust when it's vague about what it sees. So the portal now includes a plain-language transparency page that spells out exactly what the school can see (browsing activity on school-managed devices), what it can't (personal devices, personal accounts off the school network), what parents control, and how student data is handled under FERPA and COPPA.

No legalese. No hedging. We've written before about how to talk to parents about safety monitoring — this page is that conversation, pre-written for every family in your district.

En Español — Todo El Portal

Every page of the parent portal — login, registration, activity reports, blocked sites, controls, settings, and the transparency page — is now fully available in Spanish, with a one-tap toggle that remembers the choice. For districts where a large share of families speak Spanish at home, a parent portal that only speaks English isn't a parent portal. It's a demo.

Easier Rollout for Schools

Getting thousands of parents connected is its own problem, so this release also ships the school-side tooling:

  • Per-student binding codes — generate codes in bulk from the dashboard, export as CSV for a mail merge, or print ready-made paper slips (one per student, with the code and 3-step instructions) for backpack mail.
  • Self-service registration — parents create their own account at parents.kybergate.com and enter the code. No IT ticket required.
  • Clever guardian sync — districts using Clever can sync guardian contacts automatically; parents just sign in with their SIS-registered email and they're already linked.
  • Admin lifecycle controls — suspend or reactivate any parent account from the dashboard, with full audit logging.

Privacy Compliance That Runs Itself

Behind the scenes, a daily automated job now handles the lifecycle work that usually falls through the cracks: when a student leaves the district, their parent links are automatically removed and any parent-set policies are cleaned up; parent accounts that go unused for 90 days are suspended. Every action is audit-logged. COPPA and FERPA compliance shouldn't depend on someone remembering to click a button in June.

And one deliberate boundary that will never change: student safety alerts go to school counselors and staff — never to the parent portal. Wellness signals require trained response, context, and care. That's a counselor's job, not a push notification.

What This Costs

The Parent Portal is included with KyberGate:

  • Basic ($5/device/year): read-only visibility — activity reports, blocked sites, weekly safety summaries.
  • Pro ($9/device/year): everything above plus after-hours controls — bedtime, categories, pause, homework push-through — and unblock requests.

No per-parent fees. No add-on modules. See pricing for details.

Key Takeaways

  1. Parents now have real after-hours controls — bedtime, categories, and pause — that never override school policy and never touch the school day.
  2. Bedtime mode has a homework exception parents can toggle, covering ~150 curated school platforms.
  3. Unblock requests replace the 9 PM email — parents request, IT reviews in the dashboard, everyone sees the outcome.
  4. The whole portal speaks Spanish, and a transparency page tells families exactly what is and isn't monitored.
  5. Rollout is self-service — binding codes, printable slips, Clever guardian sync, and automated COPPA/FERPA lifecycle handling.
